Wanda Gafford Obituary

On Wednesday, August 14, 2019, Wanda Louise Ferguson Gafford, 64, of 2855 Richmond Hwy., Spout Spring, VA, surrounded by love left her earthly home for the promise of her Heavenly home.  Born Dec. 1, 1954, to her parents the late Louis and Ester Ferguson being the baby of six girls.

Wanda joined the Springfield Baptist Church at an early age and later joined her Mother and became a member of the Mt. Airy Baptist Church where she was once a member of the Usher Board, Pastor’s Aide Ministry and Crystal of Hope Relay for Life Team.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and sister Vivian Ferguson.

In 1972 Wanda graduated from the Appomattox County High School.  She married the love of her life, the late Welton Gafford.  Their union was blessed with two children and four grandchildren.

Wanda was employed by BWXT for many years.  She has many longstanding friendships from her high school years and BWXT.

She was known for her Faith, Humor and most of all her belief in God (Dr. Jesus as she would say would heal her completely).  For 25 years Wanda fought the battle of Brain Cancer; however, on August 14, 2019---- she surrendered and won her battle as she slipped into the arms of Jesus.  We would like to express our gratitude to The Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center, Dr. Alan Freedman, Dr. Katherine Peters, and Janae Blevins.  Their callings as Doctors, Nurses and Staff for the past 20 years went above and beyond and they became family.  We are very thankful for all the home health nurses and therapists who cared for her this past three years.

Wanda had a special earthly angel for her, niece (Mechi) who was with her from the first diagnosis of her cancer in 1994 and was by her side the entire duration of her battle.  Mechi cared for Wanda like no other could.  Mechi and Tony’s unselfishly acts of service, sacrificed time, welcoming home, and constant joy provided to Wanda are unmatched and her children are forever grateful for you and how much you loved our mother.

Wanda leaves to cherish many loving memories her son and his family, Tyrone Gafford (Kimberly) of Lynchburg, VA and grandchildren Marcus and Carson; her daughter, Adrianne Gafford Huls (Steven) of Jacksonville, NC and grandchildren Summer and Steven, Jr.  Her sisters, Henrietta Preston (James), Hyattsville, Md., Clara McIvor of Brookneal, VA, Maggie Thurman and Joyce Ferguson both of Appomattox, Va.; and her devoted niece and husband, Rev. Tony Cousins and Mechi.  Wanda will be missed by extended family, the Gafford’s, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Public visitation will be held on Sunday, Aug. 18, from 12 noon until 4 p.m. and family hour from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Bruce and Stiff Funeral Home, Appomattox, VA.

A funeral  service will be held on Monday,  August  19, 2019, 11 a.m. at the Springfield Baptist Church,  6074 Watt Abbitt Rd., Appomattox,  VA.
