Deacon Leon "Boo" Augustus Lawing, Sr.

Mr. Leon Augustus Lawing Sr. affectionately known to his friends and family as “Boo” was born May 15, 1931 in Chesterfield, Virginia. He was the eldest son of the late

Reverend Raymond Q. Lawing, Sr., and Florence Jones Lawing. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Lewis Lawing; three sisters, Antoinette Fleshman, Juanita Shrock, and Jacqueline Davis; and a loving niece Florence Gaines. 

Leon was a graduate of Carver-Price High School in Appomattox, VA. After high school, he served in the United States Army. Upon returning home, he attended Virginia State College in Petersburg, VA and graduated with a degree in education. Leon was employed by the Counties of Appomattox, Bedford, and Charlotte Court House public school systems where he taught Agriculture and Brick Masonry for many years until he retired. Leon was a member of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity and also served as a Freemason for many years. He professed Christ at an early age and was a lifetime member of Galilee Baptist Church and served on the Deacon Board. 

He is survived by his loving and devoted son, Leon A. Lawing, Jr., (Jamie) of Appomattox, VA; two brothers, Rev. Raymond Lawing, Jr., (Fornecer) of Buckingham, VA and Timotheus Lawing of Lynchburg, VA; four grandchildren, Diamond Lawing, Xavier Lawing, Leon A. Lawing III, all of Appomattox, VA and Israel Moorman of Lynchburg, VA; two devoted loved ones, Deshea Moody and Monica Mobley of Lynchburg, VA; a dedicated caregiver, Althea Kidd of Appomattox, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Leon “Boo” touched the hearts of all that knew him. His legacy is not what he left behind for you, but what he left behind within you. Whether he helped shape your life as an educator, pray for you as a man of Christ, influence you as a friend, or love and care for you as family; a part of him will live within you forever. 

A funeral service for Deacon Leon Lawing, Sr., will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, January 22, 2023 at the Galilee Baptist Church, 1044 Old Courthouse Rd., Appomattox, Va.  He will lie in repose one hour prior to the funeral service.

Public viewing will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2023 from. 12 noon until 5 pm at the Bruce and Stiff Funeral Home.
