On April 26, 2023 Ernest Lewis “Pop” Johnson departed this life in Lynchburg General Hospital, Lynchburg, VA. He was born in Prince Edward County, VA on May 15, 1942 to the late Henry and Selmo Johnson.
He joined Sulphur Spring Baptist Church at an early age. Ernest was joined in holy matrimony to Mary L. Johnson and to this union they were blessed with two children and three step-children.
Ernest loved gardening which included watermelons and sweet potatoes and enjoyed reaping the harvest. Also, 47 years in the septic tank business with his best friend/brother Oliver Stiff and many years of trucking.
Pop worked at the Lynchburg Foundry and Archer Creek Foundry for a total of 38 years until he retired in 2004. He lived and cherished many memories with three brothers, James Johnson (deceased), Jessie Johnson, Florida, and Edward Johnson, Petersburg, VA; three sisters; Ruby Scott (deceased), twin sister Ernestine Cannon (Elbert, deceased), Mattie Scott (deceased); two daughters, Serita Walker (Charles), Appomattox, VA and Shana Johnson (deceased); step-children, Carlene Artis, Lynchburg, VA, Cynthia Norfleet (Jeffrey), King George, VA and Ronnie Stokes, New Port News, Virginia; six grandchildren, Destinee Walker, Tia Walker, Keon Hamlett, Kiyawnna White, Evyon Walker, Markeit Ferguson; four great grandchildren, Malia Tucker, Malaini Tucker, Alaya Walker, Kael Hamlett, one sister-in-law Geneva Biglow, Prospect, Virginia; a very special nephew, Dale Johnson (Doreen), Prospect, VA, best friend/brother Oliver Stiff of Prospect, VA and many closer relatives and friends.
A funeral service for Mr. Johnson will be held on Thursday, May 4, 2023, 12 noon at Sulphur Spring Baptist Church, 1743 Sulphur Spring Road, Prospect, VA 23960. He will lie in repost one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at Peaks Baptist Church cemetery, 495 Chinquapin Rd., Prospect, VA 23960.
Public viewing will be held on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, 12 noon until 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
