Joyce Ferguson

On Saturday, January 3, 2026, Jesus entered Lynchburg General Hospital and spoke – Come!  Joyce Ferguson, 82, of Appomattox, VA, surrounded by loved ones, answered HIS call and peacefully accepted HIS hand.

Joyce was born April 2, 1943; the fourth daughter to her parents the late Louis M. & Esther L. Ferguson.

At an early age Joyce accepted Christ as her savior and joined the Springfield Baptist Church where she remained a faithful servant until her health began to fail.

Joyce attended the Carver-Price High School and was a graduate of the Class of 1961.  After graduation Joyce moved to Washington, DC for a short period before returning home to spend the rest of her life in Appomattox.

She retired from Babcock & Wilcox and following retirement worked in the Appomattox County School System, the Appomattox Inn and Suites and Wal-Mart.

As the gates of Heaven opened Joyce was welcomed by many loved ones that preceded her in death and she was reunited with her parents Louis & Esther; three sisters, Maggie F. Thurman, Vivian A. Ferguson and Wanda L. Gafford.

If asked Joyce her greatest gifts in life with Jesus being her first she would answer Mechi, Kevin and Gary, her rays of sunshine who she poured her life into and taught so many of life’s valuable lessons.

Those left to forever cherish her memories are her children, Arylece “Mechi” Cousins (Pastor Tony) of Spout Spring, VA, her sons Kevin (Janet) and Gary (Alicia) both of Lynchburg, VA; four grandchildren, Brittney Dolan (Anthony) Charlotte, NC, Jordan, Kyle, and Ashley Ferguson and her great-granddaughter Jersey all of Lynchburg, VA; two sisters, Henrietta Preston of Hyattsville, MD, Clara McIvor of Brookneal, VA, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends.

A Homegoing Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2026, 1 p.m. at Springfield Baptist Church, 6074 Watt Abbitt Rd., Appomattox, VA  24522.

Visitation at the funeral home will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with Family hours 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The family will receive Family and Friends at 2855 Richmond Hwy., Spout Spring, VA (Mechi's home)
