Mary Beatrice Goode, 89, of Appomattox, VA, transitioned home to be with the Lord on December 12, 2022. She was born July 4, 1933 to the late Lois Walker Goode Biglow (late Eddie) and also raised by her step-father the late Elijah Goode.
Mary spent most of her early years working at the Appomattox Garment Factory. She also attended Carver-Price School. Most people knew Mary by her nickname “Bee”. After having children Mary decided to move to Washington, D.C. with her life-long partner and late husband George Flowers.
While living in D.C. Mary worked as a housekeeper for many years and she was definitely good at what she did. Her clients truly loved her. But, in 1997, Mary decided to return to the place she always called home. Upon moving back she was able to live and enjoy life until she became ill but she still kept a smile on her face and would always keep you laughing. Mary was definitely a fighter and also a cancer survivor. I’m sure that you all knew she was very loving and caring but also mean as a rattlesnake. But, you had to love her that much more because she would do anything for anybody.
Mary was preceded in death by her son Eugene Irving; daughters, Peggy Jones (late James), Delores Powell (Claude); brothers, Danny Goode (late Linda); Henry Goode (late Mary); Sonny Walker and her sister Mattie Lawson (Bernard).
She leaves behind a daughter Rosa Housen (late Herbert); two sons, Hiawatha David Irving (Debra) and Otis Irving; two sisters, Alice Kelso (late William Zack), Rena Kelso (late Claude); her brother, Elijah Goode (Virginia); brother-in-law, Rev. Sherman Flowers, as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
We would like to acknowledge and thank Rosa Housen (daughter) for her excellence and being her mother’s full-time caregiver; also, Jeanette Christian for being supportive and comforting to the family through their grieving time. Now she is at peace and her angel wings can be free. Granny, you are gonna’ be missed. Truly we love you!
Viewing will be held from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 17, 2022 at the Bruce & Stiff Funeral Home.
Mrs. Goode's funeral service will be held on Sunday, December 18, 2022, 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 747 Court Street, Appomattox, VA 24522. She will lie in repose from 12:30 p.m. until time of service at the church. Interment will be in the Morning Star Baptist Church Cemetery, Morning Star Road, Appomattox, VA 24522
