Russell Smith Obituary

Russell Arnette Smith answered the call of his Master, Jesus Christ, early in the morning of April 29, 2022, at the Amelia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.  He was the husband of Gwendolyn White Smith.

He was born to the union of the late Glenn and Ola Smith.  This union, in addition to Russell, was blessed with Leroy (deceased), Parronneau (deceased) Carnie, Glenn (deceased), Gary, and Deborah.

Russell was affected by the school closing and attended class in Cumberland County because his dad Glenn H. Smith owned property in both counties.

After graduating from Moton High School in Farmville, VA he further pursued his education and attended Virginia State University and was working on a Bachelor’s degree at Tufts University in Massachusetts.

He chaired the finance committee for 10 years and was a member of the sanctuary choir for 15 years at First Baptist Church.  He was a regular at bible study for 20 years until his health and the health of his wife prevented him from participating regularly.  On occasion, he was seen in the basement of the church catching a little of the spiritual message for the day.

Russell opened Smith Trim Shop which was a part of the Farmville community for over 50 years.

For enjoyment he enjoyed attending church and singing in the choir, playing a good game of chess and basketball.

Other than his siblings left to cherish his memories:  wife, Gwendolyn Smith; daughter, Felice Hines; grandchildren, Cara Hines, Norfolk, VA; Royce VanDuyne, Texas; Brian McCrary, Augusta, VA; great-grandchildren, Rocco VanDuyne; Brother-in-law Gilbert White, Willingboro, New Jersey and sister-in-law Catherine Hines-Smith.  We also remember a deceased grandson, Wayne VanDuyne, Jr., and other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

A memorial service for Mr. Smith will be held on Monday, May 9, 2022, 1 p.m. in the chapel of the Bruce and Stiff Funeral Home.  Masks are required.
