Walter Evans Obituary

WALTER AUTRY EVANS was born on January 13, 1948, in Farmville, Virginia, to Queen Elizabeth Watkins Evans and Reginald Evans. He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers—Edward Dungee, James Evans, and Johnnie Evans—and his sister, Queen Elizabeth (Evelyn) Evans.

Walter grew up in Darlington Heights, Virginia, in a close-knit, loving family where siblings and cousins regularly spent time together. His family affectionately called him “Joe,” though no one was sure how he earned that nickname. He joined Triumph Baptist Church at an early age, where he remained a devoted member throughout his life.

Walter attended Prince Edward County Schools until the tenth grade, at which point the schools were closed for five years due to some citizens’ refusal to desegregate. Although Walter did not earn a high school diploma, he did not let that stop him from establishing a successful career, primarily as a truck driver.

On September 20, 1991, Walter married Cynthia Jean Jackson, and they lived in Richmond, Virginia, until relocating to Amelia, Virginia, in 1993. Walter worked for Huss Incorporated for a few years before becoming an owner-operator. He later filed an application to incorporate his business under the name Evans Trucking, Incorporated, an accomplishment of which he was especially proud. In 2008, Walter retired for medical reasons. In December 2023, he was admitted to Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Blackstone, Virginia, where he resided until his passing.

Walter and Cynthia enjoyed traveling, though Walter preferred not to drive or fly. He was happy to travel by ship or train, with memorable destinations including Portland, Maine; Memphis, Tennessee; New Orleans, Louisiana; Orlando, Florida; and the Bahamas, to name just a few.

Walter leaves behind his devoted wife, Cynthia; two daughters, Angela White and Trina Whitfield; his sisters, Lena Beatrice Womack and Marjorie Wesley of Darlington Heights; his brother, Willie Evans (Diane) of Prospect, Virginia; his aunt, Ethel Green of Prospect; his brother-in-law, William Jackson (Chantel); his brother in Christ, John Smith (Diane) of Amelia, Virginia; and a host of grandchildren, nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends.

LOVINGLY SUBMITTED,
The Family
